The Central Anatolia Region is home to one of the most emblematic cities in the world; a city that, in addition to being the administrative capital of the country, is also steeped in mystery and bursting with unique places to discover. We are, of course, referring to Ankara.
Although it is true that Ankara has a more modern and youthful feel compared to the more historic Istanbul - often chosen as a starting point for discovering the Turkish culture and venturing into unique places in the world - but Ankara is certainly worthy of an extended visit due to the large number of monuments and charming places it has to offer.
Perched on a rocky hill, Ankara offers unparalleled views and a variety of starting points from which to approach and connect with nature and culture. Its most emblematic buildings include the Anitkabir, which houses the Mausoleum of Atatürk, the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, and the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, to name but a few.
As an Islamic city, a visit to the Kocatepe Mosque, the largest mosque in the city, of great cultural significance and architectural value, is a must. Of course, a visit to the Ulus Quarter, the main shopping area, and the Hamamonu Quarter, one of the oldest, most charming and completely restored areas, as well as home to Ankara Castle with its spectacular views of the city, is not to be missed either.
