Historic Mayan city and world heritage site
Chichén Itzá is one of the most famous Mayan ruins, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramid of Kukulkán, with its remarkable light and shadow effect creating the illusion of a descending serpent during the equinoxes, is one of Mexico’s most iconic monuments, representing the grandeur of Mayan civilisation.
A gateway to another world
Cenotes are unique geological formations that resulted from a meteorite impact on the Yucatán Peninsula around 66 million years ago, an event linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This impact created a network of cenotes across the region, which the ancient Mayans revered as sacred, calling them “abysses”. Entering these waters feels like stepping into an entirely different, enigmatic world.
A treasure hidden in the jungle
Cobá was a ceremonial Mayan city that flourished during the classic period, before the rise of Chichén Itzá. It is home to the Nohoch Mul Temple, the tallest structure in the region at 42 metres. Shrouded and protected by jungle, this ancient city preserves its sacred roads, called sacbeob, which connected it to other Mayan cities.
A gateway to the Mayan past
Overlooking the Caribbean Sea with the ruins of “El Castillo” as its main landmark, Tulum was a walled city and an important trading port during the late post-classic period. This city prospered thanks to its strategic location and is one of the few seaside Mayan archaeological sites, as well as one of the first places in Mexico to greet the sunrise.
Majesty and nobility
The Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef in the world, hosts bull sharks that migrate to the region in winter to breed. Despite their impressive size, reaching up to 3 metres and 300 kilos, these sharks are noble, majestic and essential to the marine ecosystem.
