Tunisia is situated between the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. This North African enclave of Phoenician origin always surprises visitors with the beauty of its spectacular mosques, coastal landscapes and the daily hustle and bustle of its souks.
Due to its historical origins, this African enclave is a perfect option for lovers of ancient history. East of Tunis, you can visit the ruins of ancient Carthage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Carthage National Museum.
In the city’s medina quarter you’ll find the enormous mosque of Al-Zaytuna and the lively souk where the exotic aromas of spices and colourful markets offer a endless array of culinary delights.
Close to the capital is the town of Sidi Bou Said, with its characteristic white and blue houses. Coastal attractions include Monastir and the island of Djerba, one of the country’s last pottery-making centres and one of the last Jewish centres of the region.
In the city of Djem, is the Thysdrus Coliseum, the biggest Roman amphitheatre in Africa. These Roman ruins served as the backdrop to the film Gladiator. South of the capital is Matmata, with its characteristic houses carved out of the mountains and used by the director George Lucas as the setting for Star Wars.
