Downtown
Agadir’s Downtown neighbourhood is home to the city’s main avenues and most important tourist attractions. It covers the area between Boulevard Mohamed V and Avenue Hassan II, the Birds Valley, Avenue du Général Kettani and the wide Avenue des Forces Armées Royales. It is also home to the Loubnane Mosque and the Square of the Two Fountains, which leads up to the city’s open-air theatre.
It is difficult to define the city’s historic centre, since a violent earthquake that shook the city’s very foundations in 1960 destroyed practically all of its buildings. The Downtown neighbourhood is home to an abundance of government and major business buildings, shopping centres, banks, courthouses, hospitals, restaurants and municipal buildings. It is also home to the Museum of Amazigh Culture (also known as the Municipal Museum), which invites the visitor to delve into Morocco’s Berber culture, traditions, customs, lifestyle, tools and decorations, etc. The museum also organises a significant programme of temporary contemporary art exhibitions.
We recommend taking a leisurely stroll around this diverse district and enjoying the everyday scenes that reveal themselves around every corner. Children, adults and the elderly stop to talk to each other in the Downtown district, comprising pleasant and picture-perfect scenes that will live long in the memory.
It is also home to the Souk El Had, which is one of the largest and most-visited of its kind anywhere in Morocco. You can find everything that you could possibly need there, ranging from local delicacies to gifts, artisan products, textiles, rugs, shoes, tools and even cafeterias selling delicious sandwiches and natural juices, where you can take a breather from a busy morning of perusing the various stalls. It is a charming attraction that is bursting with colours.
Before leaving Agadir’s Downtown neighbourhood, be sure to find some time to sample a typical Moroccan dish in one of this historic district’s authentic restaurants.
The city’s urban beach is located relatively nearby, stretching more than 12 kilometres long and offering sunshine, golden sands and refreshing waters. This beach is a popular attraction for tourists who visit the city at any time of year.
