Bahrain Bay, located in the vibrant capital city of Manama, is a spectacular showcase of modern urban development in the beating heart of the Persian Gulf. This impressive mixed-use district, designed by the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill—the same firm that designed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower—has become a true Bahraini icon.
Completed in 2012, this contemporary oasis on the shores of the Arabian Sea captures the imagination of visitors with its futuristic architecture, vibrant nightlife and eclectic dining options. Find out how Bahrain Bay has evolved from a dated industrial hub to a cutting-edge district where the past meets the present, renowned for its vibrant cosmopolitan environment and breathtaking views of the capital’s skyline.
History and transformation
Bahrain Bay is the fruit of an ambitious urban development project launched in 2008 to revitalise the Manama waterfront. The project, which saw land reclaimed from the sea, entailed the transformation of an old industrial area into a modern and sophisticated district punctuated with skyscrapers, elegant public spaces and world-class amenities.
Architect Michael David Kirchmann came up with the idea of a series of concentric circles that, like ripples in the sea, emerge from the central island. This iconic project, which has won various international urban development prizes, reflects Bahrain’s vision of becoming one of the region’s leading financial and tourism hubs.

Attractions and places of interest
One of the highlights of Bahrain Bay is the impressive Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, which rises majestically above the waters of the Persian Gulf to comprise an instantly recognisable H-shaped structure. This hotel is the most iconic feature of Bahrain’s skyline, which also includes the 260-metre high Harbour Towers, the twisting United Tower and the 240-metre high Bahrain World Trade Center.
Take a stroll through The Gardens at Bahrain Bay to enjoy wonderful views of the city’s iconic skyline. You can also admire the skyscrapers from the water by taking a water taxi, renting a kayak or going on a gondola or ‘donut’ ride.
The stunning Al-Fateh Mosque, one of the largest in the world, is an architectural landmark that is well worth visiting. The Bahrain National Museum, meanwhile, located a short stroll from the bay, offers a fascinating insight into the country’s history and culture.
Nightlife and entertainment
Bahrain Bay has a vibrant and eclectic nightlife, characterised by a diverse range of bars, clubs and restaurants. Many of these establishments are found on either side of a canal that runs through the heart of the Wharf district. The Wharf and Rever Café are two establishments where you can enjoy a pleasant evening with delightful views of the water.
Blue Moon Lounge by Wolfgang Puck, located on the 50th floor of the Four Seasons Hotel, offers wonderful views of the city and the Persian Gulf and serves sophisticated cocktails in its Moroccan-themed lounge area. For those looking for a more lively experience, the nearby Bushido Restaurant & Lounge is highly regarded for its lively atmosphere and exquisite Japanese cuisine.
