It is fairly easy to find places to eat in Manama. The capital of Bahrain is, of course, a very gastronomic city, where locals and visitors alike enjoy going out, even on a daily basis, to sample both local delicacies and dishes originating from many other parts of the world.
There are plenty of restaurants in Manama, mainly Asian restaurants of the highest standard. To a lesser extent, there is also what is known as international (Western) cuisine.
Best restaurants in Manama
From a culinary point of view, Manama is, like other Middle Eastern capitals, an incredible fusion of flavours, ingredients and concepts. Trendy restaurants with striking designs and, sometimes, a mix of surprising flavours and ingredients, are the latest trend.
Here are some of the best restaurants in Manama. Nevertheless, as always, we recommend that you take good advice from the hotel staff and the local population.
Bushido by Buddha-Bar (Edificio 52, calle 38, bloque 428, zona Seef)
It may seem shocking to go all the way to Manama to find out that one of its best restaurants specialises in Japanese cuisine. Nevertheless, this is the case, and it makes perfect sense. Firstly, because of the many seafood products that reach the city; secondly, because of the sophistication that characterises this metropolis; and thirdly and above all, because of the many historical trade relations between Bahrain and the Far East.
Rasoi by Vineet (Rd. No. 3801)
It is the first haute cuisine restaurant under the orders of a Michelin-starred chef: Vineet Bhatia. There you can enjoy an authentic journey into modern Indian cuisine, with many creative touches. As striking as the flavours and combinations in the dishes is the décor of this restaurant, with numerous Indian art works.
China Garden (Edificio 11, Rd No. 3801)
Its name will not mislead you. There what you taste is haute cuisine originating from the three great gastronomic regions of China: Canton, Sichuan and Beijing. Under Chef Ding, the team at this restaurant prepares impeccable dim sums and, above all, Peking duck in the traditional style.
The Meat Co. (Edificio 338, Rd No. 3809)
Located in one of the city’s most iconic buildings (Adliya), this is a paradise for lovers of fine meats, which are impeccably grilled there. Alongside them, a selection of seafood and fish make up one of the most exquisite menus in the city in a restaurant spread over three floors with different atmospheres. After dinner it is worth going up to the rooftop bar.
Fish Market (Bldg. 587, Rd. 2613)
This restaurant is an incomparable option for tasting the best and most succulent riches of the sea in the form of seafood and fish. Despite the prices (somewhat higher than usual in this city), it is so popular with locals and visitors that it is advisable to book before you go or risk waiting in line.
Roka Bahrein (Puerto Baréin, Edificio 1432, Rd 4626)
Located in the iconic Pearl House in the heart of Manama Harbour, this restaurant is a sophisticated immersion into the world of sushi and the best preparations of Japanese cuisine. It is almost always based on local ingredients, especially seafood. In addition to the quality of the food, you will enjoy its design and exclusivity and the magnificent views from its large windows.
Monsoon (RD No. 3816)
The name refers to the weather phenomenon, monsoon, that dominates the life and landscapes of South East Asia. In fact, this restaurant is a tribute to the cuisines of the Far East (Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, etc.). It is all set in a luxurious atmosphere, with exquisite service from the waiting staff.
Eating traditional food in Manama
If you want authentic places to eat in Manama, the answer is clearly to be found in the country’s many traditional restaurants. You can find them all over the city, even in the most unexpected places. Here are some of the most recommended places:
Al Abraaj (RD No. 1913)
It was originally a family restaurant, well known and appreciated by the local population. It has been so successful that, over time, it has spread to several neighbourhoods in the city. It serves not only traditional Bahraini food but also food from other neighbouring countries, mainly Arabia. The menu is in both Arabic and English.
Danet AlTawawish (Avenida Tijjar con Avebida Bab Al Bahrain)
It is one of the most popular options for enjoying the country’s traditional cuisine in the heart of the city centre. It does not have any frills or pretensions but it does have the authenticity of home-cooked food, which is plentiful and varied. To make it easier for diners to choose, there are photographs of all the dishes on the menu.
Naseef (junto al puente Sheikh Hamad, Muharraq)
It has several restaurants in Muharraq and next to Seef Quay. In addition to its traditional specialities, it has a large variety of desserts and canapés (to take away), as well as the occasional fusion novelty. The restaurant runs from breakfast to dinner, with a good quality product and quite affordable prices.
Street food and markets
Among the best places to eat in Manama are clearly the souks, i.e. the markets. Both inside them and in their surroundings, it is common to find small establishments where you can taste the country’s most popular and traditional cuisine.
Within the souks themselves, you can also buy all kinds of food products, both processed and unprocessed. They include irresistible Arab confectionery, stuffed dates plus fruit and flavoured ice creams, which are essential during the hottest periods of the year. The most recommended is the Manama Souk itself and, more specifically, near the Gold Souk, located in the city’s historic centre.
