If you are looking for a perfect Mediterranean beach, with warm, blue and clear waters, perfect for snorkelling or scuba diving but with a magical light, then you must visit Malta’s Blue Lagoon. It has all that… and much more.
Natural setting
This natural pool is located between the island of Comino and the islet of Cominotto. It is actually a sheltered cove with very little depth, which allows the light to become a magical element in contrast to the white sandy bottom. That and the warm blue waters are what give it a more paradisiacal look.
Between the rocky part and the sandbanks, the Blue Lagoon has a very rich marine life consisting of local plants and numerous species of more exotic animals.
What to see and do during your visit
It is a perfect beach for bathing, swimming and sunbathing. You can also be amazed by the rich marine life on its seabed while snorkelling or scuba diving. Moreover, the place is perfect for non-expert amateurs because the water is quite warm and there is not much depth.
You can also walk to the islet of Cominotto, but be warned that bathing there is more dangerous due to the strong sea currents and there is only one lifeguard at peak bathing hours and in the summer months.
How to get there
There are two ways to enjoy the Blue Lagoon: on a private boat trip, which usually includes food and drinks, or with the ferries to the island, which usually depart from Cirkewwa in the north of Malta or from Mgarr on the island of Gozo. In both cases, there are boats every hour between 8:00 or 9:00 and 16:00 and the journey takes about 20 minutes, making it a wonderful Instagrammable trip.
The main problem is getting to Cirkewwa if you do not have a car. There are buses to Silema or St. Julian’s, but they take about one hour.
Facilities in the area
Although it is a beach that tries to preserve its natural essence, being a very touristy destination means that you will find almost everything in the Blue Lagoon.
Many visitors bring their own food to enjoy the place without having to wait, although there is a fast food restaurant and you can also enjoy a nice meal at the nearby Comino hotel.
This incredible natural pool also has a sun lounger and parasol rental service, perfect for those who do not want to carry too much.
Recommendations for your visit
The Blue Lagoon is one of the busiest summer spots in Malta, so the first tip is to visit outside the summer season, i.e. not in July or August. If you travel during those months, the best thing to do if you are not going on a boat trip is to get up early so that you can find a spot on the beach where you can stretch out your towel and set up your parasol. The sunset is also very beautiful at the lagoon and after four o’clock in the afternoon there are fewer people.
Remember that there is no shade so, if you do not want to pay for a parasol and sun lounger, you should take them on the ferry and do not forget to bring sun cream because the rays are very strong, especially during the summer.
There is a restaurant nearby but it is advisable to pack liquids and snacks in your rucksack if you want to relax on your towel without moving too much.
Things to see nearby
From the Blue Lagoon, it is easy to explore the island of Comino, which has incredible natural areas and beautiful beaches. The most striking ones are those on St. Nicholas bay and St. Mary’s bay. Both have clear, warm waters that make bathing very pleasant.
Another option is to rent a boat to visit the Santa Maria and Crystal caves, very close to the Blue Lagoon. They are very interesting places for diving enthusiasts.
In the cooler months, Comino island is ideal for hiking trails that cover the entire island with incredible views of the Mediterranean.
