A weekend in Fez is a fantastic option, whoever you are travelling with. Fez is a historic, magical, imperial city, where you can explore the largest medina in the world, hidden behind a city wall with decorated entrances.
You will want to wander in the medina, but without missing the mosques, madrassas and souks that you’ll find in every neighbourhood and down any alley. As you cross different streets, you will find that the traders are grouped according to their guild, making it easy to find spices, henna, sweets, items made of wood, metal or leather, and more.
Don’t forget to sample the incredible gastronomy and the mint tea.
Itinerary day 1
18.00 - 19.00
Royal Palace
It is one of the must-see sights of Fez but further away from the medina, so it is easy to visit it first to get a small idea of the beauty in the decoration of the gates of this enclosure. You can not enter but it is worth touring the environment.
19.00-20.00
Jewish Quarter
The doors that give entrance to this area of the medina already show an idea of the difference with the rest. Although it is more deteriorated than the others, it is worth taking a walk around one of the oldest synagogues and notice the difference in the houses compared to the Muslim part with balconies overlooking the street. Before reaching this neighborhood is the Jewish cemetery with the famous tomb of the young Salika, who died at age 17 before marrying a Muslim and having to convert.
20.30 - 22.00
Le Jardin in Ruined Restaurant
Already inside the medina, at 15 Derb Idrissy Sidi Ahmed Chaoui, is this place that acts as a refreshment in itself against the heat that usually makes the streets of Fez. Its garden, located among ruins and full of plants, is a perfect place for the first contact with the traditional Moroccan gastronomy since its cuisine offers abundant and very rich dishes.

In the various rooms you can see the tools traditionally used by this guild, musical instruments and carved antique doors. In the surroundings is located the souk of the cabinetmakers, the best place to buy any wooden object that we crave.

Located in the North Tower of the city or the Borj Nord, as it is known, it presents one of the best views over the old city of Fez. In addition, this military fort has a rich exhibition of historical weapons, which has made it the most important museum of the entire continent in this field. In its showcases there are not only Moroccan examples but also from Europe, India and other Asian countries.

This 17th century garden was built by Sultan Moulay Abdellad for his family to have a paradise on earth. A waterwheel, a lake and an Andalusian garden are some of its attractions, in addition to the green areas of rest that makes it a meeting place for tourists and locals. One of the most visited areas is the promenade with palm trees.

You can start the visit through the heart of Fez, a maze of streets and neighborhoods, from any of the gates that open in the wall, but the Blue Gate or Bab Bou Jeloud is a good place to start our walk through the largest pedestrian area in the world. Two are the main streets that cross this space, Talaa Kebira and Talaa Seghira, and it is not a bad idea to try going up one and down the other to be located. You can also hire the services of a guide to not miss the most important points of the route. In addition to the various guild souks that open up as we pass through, keep an eye out for the mosques, which cannot be visited but you can take a look from the door, the madrasas and the gates. The easiest way to see how it is done is to go to the Chouwara Tannery, the largest in the city, and enter one of the leather goods stores that open in the buildings surrounding this square and ask to be allowed to look out from their terraces. They will give us a bunch of mint essential to endure the stench and then try to sell us anything. If we don't buy anything, the polite thing to do is to tip them for the show.
