Jebel Shams is the highest peak in Oman and on the Arabian Peninsula, but it is quite accessible as the route around its most impressive corners has very little elevation gain and can be done without much preparation. The problem is for people with vertigo because the cliffs are very high while the views are marvellous.

Natural setting

This mountain is part of the Al Hajar range in the north-east of the country and is one of the highest on the Arabian Peninsula. It is very famous because of the depth of the surrounding wadis, such as Wadi Nakhr which is up to 2,000 metres high in some parts; some of its sections are even deeper than the famous Colorado Canyon in the USA.

It is an arid and cold environment in the winter, where snow can even be seen on occasion, but surrounded by some of the country’s most lush oases with date palms; up to 45 species of dates can be found in Oman.

You cannot reach its highest point, the northern peak, because it is occupied by military facilities, but you can climb almost 3,000 metres in the south.

How to get there

It is a very popular area with hikers and climbers as the route can be done freely. The trail starts at Al Khitaym, which is a small village where the hikers meet to start the trek. The roads from Muscat, Al Hamra or Nizwa are relatively good until the last few kilometres, where a steep unpaved road begins.

You can get there with any rental car but it is much better if you travel in an off-road vehicle because it will allow you to go up more easily.

Hiking trails in the area

The most famous route is the Balcony Trail, a path of only 300 metres of accumulated height gain that allows many hikers to enjoy it without any specific preparation. Some sections can be a little dizzying, but it is a safe route and is marked all the time by a coloured strip.

It lasts three or four hours and, as it passes through areas higher than 1,900 metres, you may feel a little short of breath.

This route also has a very impressive via ferrata that is also very popular with mountain enthusiasts, but you need special equipment and preparation.

Recommendations for your visit

The first recommendation is to carry everything you need in your backpack because there are not many shops and villages around. Above all, be prepared with plenty of water and some food.

Although it is usually very hot in Oman, the temperature in Jebel Shams drops to 20°C in summer and can reach 0°C in winter, so dress for the season with wind and sun protection (sunscreen, cap and sunglasses).

Although the route is simple, it is still a mountain trail, so you must have suitable footwear that grips well to avoid incidents.

Other places to see nearby

One of the best places to visit after the Jebel Shams peak is Wadi Nakhr, known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia because of its depth. From the mountain you can see the course of this ancient river, but the views from the wadi are also incredible. In some areas it reaches a depth of 2,000 metres, much deeper than the Colorado Canyon in the USA.

After the gorge dotted with plantations and greenery, you will find a small village, An Nakhr, where you can visit a market full of tapestriWhere to stay in Omans and carpets since there are many weavers in this area.
