The Fuentes del Algar combine the wild beauty of the water with the spectacular and peaceful landscape of the Sierra del Ferrer. Very close to the town of Callosa d’en Sarrià, about 10 minutes by car, a journey of almost 2 kilometres awaits us among spectacular waterfalls, turquoise pools and small streams that flow down from the mountains that attract the attention of locals and tourists alike. At each step of the river Algar, which is formed at the springs, the landscape becomes greener, winding through the thick vegetation until it flows into the Mediterranean Sea, around 12 kilometres towards the coast.

This natural water park, sculpted by the force of water that has eroded the limestone rock, has been a protected area since 2002. It has several waterfalls and lovely natural pools where you can cool down, especially in summer. Of course, the water comes directly from the mountain so, in addition to being clean and crystal clear, it is fresh all year round.

Pools and waterfalls at Fuentes del Algar

At the beginning of the route is the main attraction of Fuentes del Algar, an impressive 10-metre-high waterfall that can be reached by swimming. This area is also known as toll de la Caldera. Toll, which in Valencian means pool, refers to the state of the water on the ground: absolute calm. For photography lovers, this is a magical setting with a thousand possibilities.

Leaving the waterfall behind and following the wooden path along the river, which has stairs and a handrail, you reach a large pool with a diving board from which the most adventurous people jump. This is the toll Blau, a deep water pool with a beautiful turquoise colour. It is followed by toll del Baladre and toll de la Presa, where the dam wall creates a curtain-like waterfall.

As you ascend the road to the source of the river Algar, you can enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the surroundings without many people, especially during the week. In the area known as la Tribu beach, a small rocky island in the middle of the channel, you will find the toll de la Figuera and the toll de la Parra, the last spot suitable for a swim. In this section, the water is not very deep, so it is an ideal place for children to play without worrying about currents or drops. However, we recommend wearing covered sandals to avoid slipping on the stones at the bottom.

Nature in its purest form

Next to the entrance, at the top of the springs, a tree-lined garden full of Mediterranean plants such as orange blossoms, camomile or rosemary leads the way to the first toll. More than 200 plants welcome visitors every day with their aromas, also contributing to the use and conservation of the natural environment. At the end of this Arboretum you will reach the old canal that runs to the Fuentes del Algar facilities, where you will find the toilets and the first aid station. In addition, the park has a camping area with spaces for tents and caravans, as well as an area for barbecues and where children can play.

Very close to this spectacular site is DinoPark, a place for families and for dinosaur lovers that has full-size stationary and robotic models that produce sound. The facilities include a paleontological patio, a botanical cactus garden, a 3D cinema and, of course, a children’s play area.

If you prefer mountains, we recommend the route that goes from Fuentes del Algar to the Fort of Bernia, an ancient fortress built against the Ottomans that still has its arches, moat, bastion and some remains of the walls. The PRV-48 Route, which marks the way to the fort, crosses ancient terraces, caves and offers beautiful views of the Costa Blanca.

Another interesting option is Guadalest, which you can reach by car. This town high in the mountains is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
