Context and situation of Poniente beach
Poniente beach has always been a favourite for Spanish tourists going to Benidorm to enjoy the sea and a good temperature. It is a long and wide beach with fine sand and is much calmer than other bathing areas in Benidorm. Therefore, it is always very crowded.
It has received the Blue Flag award since 1987, which guarantees the quality of the beach, and was one of the first to make it clear why it has been worth going to the Mediterranean.
The construction of some legendary buildings, such as the M-Shaped InTempo, has made the beach skyline one of the most well-known in Europe, combining architecture with golden sand.
At the end of Poniente beach is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Benidorm called the Balcony over the Mediterranean, which separates this beach from Levante beach. The photos from the viewpoint are incredible and you can enjoy Castle Square, which houses the anchors and cannons that mark the history of this enclave. Once there, do not forget to go down some stairs that lead to a small square that seems to hang from the cliff and which is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunrise.
Beach services
Poniente beach has everything you can imagine for an unforgettable day. In addition to the basic shower and footbath facilities, both standing and sitting, plus surveillance, the leisure activities range from playing beach football in the goal areas to parasailing.
Most of the water sports must be booked at the huts at the end of the beach. To get to the floating platforms, you just have to swim a little and join the fun straight away.
For those who want something more relaxing, on Poniente beach you can rent a sun lounger and a parasol and even stop by the beach library stall to pick up a good book to read while sunbathing.
For the little ones, there are up to six children’s play areas and twelve playgrounds for games and sports.
It is also an accessible beach with several walkways and two access points for the disabled, so that absolutely everyone can have fun.
Location of Poniente beach
Poniente beach is very easy to find as it borders the Benidorm marina on one side and El Tossal on the other. In total there are more than three kilometres of fine sand with a width of more than 100 metres, which is not bad for the Mediterranean.
Since it is in the centre of Benidorm, it is a beach with very easy access through the promenade which is full of beach bars, restaurants and terraces where you can enjoy the sea from inside or outside the beach. Parking is often difficult and limited, but you can reach the promenade by car and look for a car park nearby.
Where to eat nearby
There are plenty of restaurants along the promenade for a quick and tasty meal. If you want to try Alicante’s gastronomy, there are several options at Poniente beach such as El Pescaíto, a family restaurant where you can eat good fresh fish and rice dishes. It is best to make a reservation as it tends to be very busy.
Not far away is the Las Gaviotas fried fish restaurant, where local seafood and fish can be enjoyed cooked in several ways, but always very tasty. The portions are plentiful and the food is of high quality.
From this area, another option is to cross over to the narrow streets of the centre, the so-called Los Vascos area, where the tapas are spectacular no matter which bar you go to. If you do not want to lose sight of the sea, you can also choose the restaurant with terrace at Benidorm’s Club Naútico or Puerto Deportivo, right at the end of Poniente beach, where you can continue to enjoy the sun and the sea.
