For many years now Girona has been among the best food destinations in the world. Apart from boasting one of the most balanced, tasty and varied traditional cuisines on the planet, the reason for this lies with the three Roca brothers (Joan, Josep and Jordi). Thanks to the restaurant they inherited from their parents (El Celler de Can Roca) the three esteemed restaurateurs have become leading names in international haute cuisine.
But many other establishments are following in the footsteps of the Roca brothers with highly original, top-quality creations. Others, meanwhile, fly the flag for traditional Catalan cuisine as well as shellfish and game, which is highly characteristic of the region.
Best restaurants in Girona
As well as featuring in the Michelin and Repsol guides, the following restaurants in Girona are among the top choices of the loyal diners who return to them again and again, safe in the knowledge that they will always enjoy a top-quality meal.
- Celler de Can Roca (Can Sunyer, 48): what more can be said about what has been for several years the best of the best according to critics from The 50 Best Restaurants in the World. Despite national and international recognition, the Roca family and their team’s enthusiasm for their work never wanes and diners can expect great surprises and the guarantee of enjoying the culinary experience of a lifetime.
- Massana (Bonastruc de Porta, 10): with almost 40 years of experience in the city, Pere Massana is one of the main culinary treasures in Girona. The restaurant serves gourmet cuisine based on the seasonal produce grown in the region with a healthy dose of creativity in terms of their cooking methods, presentation and combinations of ingredients and textures.
- Divinum (Albereda, 7): more than a restaurant, Divinum is, in the words of its owners, a gastronomic space. In fact, you would be hard pressed to believe that behind the doors of what looks like a wine shop (it is in fact the business’ wine cellar) hides a restaurant full of so much personality and surprises. Created over a period of many years by the front-of-house managers Joan
- Morillo and Laura Tejero, the restaurant is their own personal universe. Its tasting menu, which varies according to the season, constantly amazes and features a painstakingly chosen selection of ingredients.
- SiNoFos (Plaza Cataluña, 25 B): the name of this establishment refers to the banks often used by unemployed people (Sin Oficio). Such originality is also applied to the restaurant itself, where Marc Ramos, head chef, works with the finest produce (Joselito ham, oysters, seasonal mushrooms, sea cucumbers, Carpier salmon, LyO meat, etc.) to seduce even the most discerning but somewhat biased diners.
- Normal (Plaza de l’Oli, 1): despite what the Roca brothers, the owners and inspiration behind this restaurant, say, this restaurant is nothing but ‘normal’. Firstly, for the quality assurance that comes from the family’s backing. Secondly, for the superb Mediterranean-inspired dishes (with a few international haute cuisine twists) that it serves. And, thirdly, for the well chosen wine selection that includes everything from local labels to the most international wines. At the helm of the kitchen is the creative Elisabet Nolla.
Regional and Catalan restaurants
In the most gastronomic and traditional of Catalonia’s provinces, you cannot leave without trying some of the best local dishes. Below are some of the most recommended:
- Casa Marieta (Plaza de la Independencia, 5): since no less than 1892 this restaurant has been seducing the most discerning and traditional palates with dishes such as snails, chicken with crayfish, roasted lamb shoulder, cannelloni and mixed paella.
- El Cul del Món (Disseminat de San Daniel, 3): this establishment serves Catalan cuisine created with a very contemporary touch without foregoing ‘modern’ ingredients, techniques and presentation. Food is served in a lovely dining room housed in a large stone house with wooden floors.
- El Cabrit (Barcelona, 423): you won’t be surprised to find out that the star ingredient of this restaurant is kid goat (cabrit in Catalan). Cooked over a wood fire, it is truly delicious. To accompany it, you can opt for delicious chicken croquettes, sea and land snails or the El Cabrit salad.
- Can Vidal (Plaza Miquel de Palol, 1-2): with no frills nor fancy decoration and with a relatively short menu, this restaurant nevertheless encompasses some of the finest flavours of Girona’s traditional cuisine, such as snails, seasonal mushrooms, meatballs, clams and Olot potatoes.
- La Taverna de El Foment (Mercaders, 13): the modern look of this establishment may be somewhat misleading, because what really matters, the food, is in actual fact very traditional and authentic. Dishes include a selection of cassoletes (small casseroles), butifarra sausage, cod au gratin, artisan cheeses and, of course, an assortment of local cold cuts with bread and tomato.
Original restaurants in Girona
Following the legacy made by Girona’s greatest chefs over the decades, every year new culinary options as original and as delicious as the following pop up in the city:
- Terram (Santa Llúcia, 2): very few tables, open kitchen, a young team that really clicks with each other and very modern, attractive and, of course, convincing culinary creations. This original restaurant sets new trends in a city such as Girona that is used to novel ideas. And that deserves a lot of merit.
- München (Pedret, 136): originality already comes in the form of this restaurant’s name, Munich in German, and in what the owners describe as ‘market-fresh Catalan cuisine’. Which is exactly what it is: nothing to do with German food. Dishes, which are perfect for sharing with friends, family or your partner, are colourful and striking, contrasting with the exposed stone walls.
- La Fàbrica Girona (La Llebre, 3): an establishment with a dual function, operating as a cafeteria and restaurant, founded by Amber and Christian, the ex-professional cyclist, who settled in the country just over a decade ago. In terms of food, they offer an unusual combination of healthy dishes and the fusion flavours that he sampled during his many trips around the world throughout his sporting career.
- Vintages (Cort Reial, 15). With a bistro concept, this small restaurant offers fun and surprising flavours and ingredient combinations. Take for instance the octopus from Llançá with red pesto and celery root purée or the cherry gazpacho with passion fruit sorbet. The quality and flavour of dishes such as boneless pig’s trotters stuffed with duck confit are also irresistible.
