What to visit in southern Gran Canaria

The island has so much more to offer than a sun-kissed beach-body. The south coast brims with sights where you can discover the rich culture and heritage of the island and its people.

The Dunes of Maspalomas

This designated Special Natural Reserve occupies more than 400 hectares and is the top attraction of the island. The giant, wind-swept dunes form a Sahara-like desert right against the sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean.

The best time to visit the dunes is at dusk, when the sun and the shadows create a dramatic spectacle. The views aren’t the only thing that will leave you breathless, so will the trek up the dunes.

Take motorway GC-1 along the coast to reach the quaint fishermen’s village of Arguineguín. The port and the fishermen’s quarters still maintain the traditional essence of bygone days. It is also the best place to savour ocean fresh fish and seafood. Where to go? Try the fishermen’s guild located at the port.

Puerto Rico

The resort down of Puerto Rico is located right after Arguineguín and is the ideal place to get some shopping done, have a go at some water sports and enjoy the nightlife. You can book a whale-watching excursion or rent kayaks or Jet Skis at the marina. When the sun sets, grab a drink at some of the hottest clubs and bars of southern Gran Canaria.

Come discover the picturesque seafaring village of Puerto de Mogán and its curious Venice-like channels, bordered by whitewashed cottages.

The top beaches of southern Gran Canaria

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés may be the most renowned beaches of the Canary Islands but the south coast is peppered with idyllic sandy stretches without the crowds.

Playa de Amadores

This beach’s calm waters are perfect for children or for adults looking for a relaxing dip. Golden sand and cerulean water are bounded by two breakwaters which give shape to a semi-open bay. The beach is easily accessible from a bustling promenade, lined with restaurants and shops.

Playa de Güigüi

The most unspoilt and exotic beach of Gran Canaria is only accessible by undertaking a 2-hour hike through mountains and ravines (good physical form is required) or by boat from the Port of Mogán. This beach is off-the-beaten-track so you can enjoy stunning, unencumbered views without the hordes of tourists.

Playa de Tiritaña

This secluded beach is located at the end of a small ravine and bounded by rocky cliffs. Since it is tucked out of sight, it doesn’t get crowded and is popular with nudists. Young people also camp out here. To access the beach, leave your vehicle in the carpark and walk the last stretch.

Anfi del Mar Beach

This tiny oasis of crystalline water and fine, white sand is perfect for families and couples seeking peace and tranquillity. The beach is equipped with all types of amenities and facilities and is accessible via the promenade.

Isla Anfi del Mar playa

Playa Montaña Arena

This is one of the few, remaining unspoilt beaches of the island where you can camp under the stars and practise nudism. There are no nearby restaurants or shops so pack a picnic. You’ll need to take a 15-minute walk along a dirt path that snakes along the coast before reaching the beach – pack lightly!

Playa del Cabrón

This is another of the lesser-known jewels of southern Gran Canaria. The beach is named after the conquistador Pedro Cabrón who disembarked here during the conquest of the Canary Islands. It is a prime diving spot so don’t forget your flippers! You’ll need to walk along a dirt path from El Albergue to reach the beach but the walk affords great views of the Arinaga Lighthouse and the limestone landscape.
