The area between the south-east of Portugal and the west of Andalusia has one of the largest copper reserves in the world. The Odiel River is located in the heart of the Huelva mining area, a piece of Mars on Earth.
Hand in hand with our local expert guide, we offer you this very easy 3-hour walk along a flat path with a very gradual descend/ascent of 120 meters. We left the mining towns of Calañas and Zalamea La Real to cross eucalyptus and pine plantations on the edge of the river. On our wlak we see old mills in the past were essential for the area. Then, the road joins the old railway crossing where we find "teleras" and slag heaps until it reaches the recently reopened Sotiel mine, which is crowned by a beautiful Roman bridge.
The gold and silver from the Huelva mine enticed Phoenicians, Greeks and later Romans to the mythical land of Tartessos. This ancient mining activity has transformed both the river and the environment, dyeing the water and the rocky slopes with amazing red, yellow and green colors. Come with us to enjoy one of the most impressive walks in Andalusia!
