Barely 150 metres long, Benirrás beach (Benirràs in Catalan) is one of the most frequented and popular beaches in the north of Ibiza. It is famous both for its spectacular sunsets and for the hippy party that is held every Sunday in this stunning location. It has the added advantage of being located just 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of San Miguel and San Juan.

This is a beautiful and charming cove with coarse sand, surrounded by hills and rocks, which gives you the chance to get some perspective from above and catch a glimpse of a dreamlike landscape facing the sea as well as its famous islet, known as dedo de Dios (finger of God). Its actual name, however, is Cap Bernat. In this cove, which has a rocky seabed, the waters are crystal clear and glow a spectacular blue, making it an ideal place for diving and snorkelling. However, if you want to go for a swim, you should ideally wear rubber sandals to avoid slipping and falling.

Cala Benirràs, the place to watch sunsets

Cala Benirràs, one of the must-visit destinations in Ibiza, is much appreciated by owners of private yachts and boats to moor their vessels and enjoy the sunset, as the sunsets are famous on this little part of Ibiza. On Sundays in summer, even more boats join in to watch the iconic neo-hippy drumming ritual. It’s a unique, and now legendary, experience that has been celebrated for many decades.

The origins of the Benirrás drum festival go back a long way. It seems that in the 1970s a group of hippies spontaneously began to celebrate the magical light projected on Cala Benirràs during sunsets with the sound of drums, and since then it has become a rite of improvised rhythms that’s a must-see for many people. This means that Benirrás, also considered one of the best beaches in Ibiza, is one of those places that tourists write down in red as a must on their tourist getaway to the island. And if you’re also one of those who are up for a blast, get a drum and join the party. You’ll be very welcome. Because here you’ll find visitors who react in very different ways to the sound of the drums. There are those who take part in the ritual, those who don’t stop taking photos, those who dance and those who simply watch the spectacle with their eyes wide open.

Drums in Benirrás, a ritual of farewell to the sun

We must say that the sound and percussion of the drums doesn’t stop all afternoon. And as there are many people taking part in the festival, it’s worth remembering that the noise of the percussion is not suitable for all ears and audiences. This is a warning that’s mainly aimed at families with very young children, as they might get scared.

Due to the demand for this unique ritual of tribal rhythms, during the summer the drums sometimes sound on nights other than Sundays and the drumming usually begins an hour or two before sunset.

In neighbouring Sant Joan de Labritja, several days a week there is a typical hippy market, with stalls selling Adlib fashion, accessories, handicrafts, etc., although you can also find bracelets, anklets, and other handmade items at the beach bar in Benirrás.

Where to eat at Cala de Benirrás

If you’d like to eat in Benirrás, you can in a beach bar or in one of the restaurants that overlook the sea and that have a good gastronomic offer. The best known are Restaurante 2000, restaurante Elements, and Roca y Mar. Here you can enjoy food typical of Ibiza and also, if you’d like, a pizza prepared in the oven.
