A kayak tour of Ibiza? Take note of these tips

In general, both in summer and winter, the calm waters of the Mediterranean as it passes through Ibiza make the island an ideal place to practise this fun water sport. In fact, outside the summer season, a kayak excursion becomes even more enjoyable, as this water sport, like all kinds of leisure and sporting activities on the island, is more popular during the summer months.

That said, it’s important to bear in mind that you need to be in good shape physically to carry out a kayak trip. The excursions offered by kayak rental centres usually last no less than two hours and some itineraries can be exhausting for those who aren’t in good shape. However, there’s a varied selection and you can choose kayak types for two or even four people, ideal for an excursion as a couple or as a family.

It’s also important to be safe and wear a life jacket at all times. Falling out of a kayak without a life jacket after having made a significant physical effort can put you in danger. It’s also vital to protect ourselves from the sun with a cap and sunscreen. And lastly, you should bring snorkelling equipment (goggles and snorkel) with you, to get the most out of your dives into the water, and water shoes in case we come across islets or rocky areas and want to walk around the area.

The best kayaking routes and excursions in Ibiza

Depending on your level, you can choose between many kayak routes, with the main difference being the time that we’ll spend on them. There are routes of about five kilometres, which are accessible to everyone, but there are others of 15 or more kilometres that are much more demanding. With this criterion in mind, we have broken down the routes by level.

Easy kayaking routes around Ibiza

Most of the kayak excursions around Ibiza offered by the equipment rental centres are routes that pose hardly any difficulties. Most of these routes are no longer than five kilometres and can be done in an hour and a half. We’ll point out the best-known ones.

  • Ses Figueretes – Es Soto.

It starts from the urban beach of Ses Figueretes, in the city of Ibiza, heading north until it reaches the port of Ibiza, skirting the coast and overlooking the beautiful area of Dalt Vila, before returning to its starting point. It is 4.7 kilometres long and takes no more than an hour and a half to complete.

  • Cala Bassa – Punta de Sa Pedrera.

Another four-kilometre route lasting no more than an hour and a half. This excursion takes you to the northern stretch of the coast of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, in the west part of the island. It starts at the long beach of Cala Bassa and runs along the coast towards the east. On our itinerary we’ll see incredible sea caves that we can access and we must always make sure we do so with caution. We continue until we reach Punta de Sa Pedrera and then return to Cala Bassa.

  • Cala Xarraca – Es Canaret.

Medium-difficulty kayaking routes around Ibiza

The routes of medium difficulty involve itineraries of between ten and 15 kilometres and last more than two hours. Here are two of the most popular ones.

  • Cala Carbó – Es Vedrà y Es Vedranell.

This route takes you to the two magical islets of Ibiza, located on the west coast of the island. This is a route that runs through a protected area, so we must exercise extreme caution and show respect for the environment. The route skirts both islets and allows you to enjoy one of the most incredible sunsets, weather permitting, of course. The circular route takes around three hours and covers a distance of 14.3 kilometres.

  • Benirràs – Es Canaret.

This route allows you to discover a practically unspoilt stretch of the northwest coast of Ibiza. It starts at the legendary Benirràs beach and crosses a coastline full of fascinating cavities and caves, as well as incredible islets. Once we have passed Punta Negra and Cap Blanc, we reach the bay of Es Canaret. We cross it to rest on a small beach under a small freshwater waterfall. We then take the route in reverse. In total it covers 10.3 kilometres in just over two hours.

It’s also possible to do more demanding routes that are over 15 kilometres long and last more than three hours. We propose an itinerary as an example.

  • Es Portitxol de Portinatx – Port de San Miquel.

This is a one-way trip that runs along a large part of the northeast coast of the island, one of the untamed and most rugged areas of Ibiza, which is difficult to reach by land. It takes around three hours to cover the 15.3 kilometres that separate the point of origin and the point of destination.

Long-distance kayaking trips for the most experienced kayakers

Lastly, there are two crossings that are only suitable for the most expert kayakers and are done in several stages.

  • Es Torrent – Cala Vedella – Port des Torrent.

This long route, which takes two days, allows you to discover the entire southwest coast of Ibiza over a distance of 35.5 kilometres. The first stage runs along the entire southwest corner, passing the islet of Es Vedrà and Cala d’Hort until reaching Cala Vedella. The second stage continues along the coastline towards the north until reaching Port des Torrent.

  • A Kayak Tour of Ibiza.

More than just a crossing, this is a real challenge. However, since 2011, a company by the name of Vuelta a Ibiza Kayak (C/ Andalucía 4, Can Nadal) has been offering the most intrepid travellers the chance to discover the island by kayaking around its coastline. It takes around a week to do so. In 2014, this company was recognised at Fitur as the Best Active Tourism Product.

Many of the companies allow you to choose between doing routes with a monitor or renting only the kayak and basic equipment.
