Ibiza is made up of small villages that are microcosms of the island. Each one follows its own traditions and has unique attractions that are not to be missed. Not only do we recommend the municipalities close to the sea, but inland there is also more than one gem awaiting you, as can be said for Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, right in the central region.

Santa Gertrudis is regarded as one of the most lively villages in Ibiza, as well as being very welcoming. It’s full of bars and restaurants and welcomes tourists all year round. After a thorough remodelling, the square was closed to traffic and the streets became pedestrian streets, showing the contrast between the traditional establishments and the more modern ones.

What to see in Santa Gertrudis

Life in this little village of white houses revolves around the church and the square, a space that has been totally transformed for the use and enjoyment of its visitors. The church was completed in the late 18th century, and its bell tower, which was added later, is one of the largest in Ibiza. The current façade has whitewashed walls, but an original altarpiece is still preserved inside.

The urban centre grew around the square, which today is full of bars and terraces where you can enjoy the lively nature of Santa Gertrudis. The bronze sculpture that presides over the square represents the first bishop of Ibiza, and is signed by the artist from the island Pedro Hormigo.

Bar Costa, the Santa Gertrudis sandwich restaurant

Although it may seem strange, one of the reasons people visit Santa Gertrudis are the famous toasted sandwiches that many of its establishments offer, and at very good prices.

In the square, the one that gets all the attention is Bar Costa, which was a pioneer when it came to making these ham sandwiches with toasted bread and tomato. Their simplicity and authentic flavour have become a symbol of the town, a tradition.

There are long queues to taste them at Bar Costa, which is equally striking for its decoration. The rooms are decorated with a variety of paintings by local hippie artists. They only serve sandwiches and, even if you have to wait a little while, we can assure you it’s worth it. Don’t leave without trying them!

In Santa Gertrudis you can also go shopping

Another of the attractions of Santa Gertrudis is its craft shops, where you’ll find everything from typical local clothing to things to go with it and accessories. If you’re looking for a special gift or want to treat yourself, you’re in the right place, as boutiques are everywhere.

Equally outstanding are the art galleries, as the town is home to many artists of different nationalities. Soak up the bohemian spirit that multiculturalism brings to Santa Gertrudis.

A romantic dinner in Finca la Plaza

If there’s one thing Santa Gertrudis is known for, it’s the large number of restaurants where you can spend a quiet evening away from the island’s famous party atmosphere.

Would you like to go to a romantic place? Head for the restaurant Finca la Plaza, leaving the church to one side. Its beautiful garden will welcome you and provide that intimate space you’ve been dreaming of. The menu is simple, with local produce and Mediterranean dishes bursting with flavour.

The food is usually served on wooden platters in keeping with the rustic feel. The king of their kitchen is the charcoal oven, which they use for many dishes to intensify the flavours of their raw ingredients. It also has a wonderful wine cellar. Can you imagine a more idyllic place?

What to see near Santa Gertrudis

The surrounding area of Santa Gertrudis is dominated by an agricultural landscape that will allow you to discover what rural Ibiza was like in years gone by.

Take a walk along the unpaved roads and lose yourself in nature, where you’ll find some of the largest agri-food businesses on the island, such as the only dairy cow farm.

If you’re strolling around Santa Gertrudis, don’t miss the restaurant Can Caus, where everything they offer is home-made. It’s a fine place, perfect for a good treat. The restaurant also has a shop where you can buy its products.

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera and its festivities

If you visit Ibiza in November, you can attend the festivities in this town. They are held around the 16th. A marquee is set up in the square to host concerts and there are tastings as well as a small fair to keep the little ones entertained. It’s the perfect time to get to know Santa Gertrudis at its best.
