The museum was officially inaugurated on September 10, 1992, and is named for Queen Sofía. The museum is mainly dedicated to Spanish art, the highlights of the museum include excellent collections of Spain’s three greatest 20th-century masters Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The most famous masterpiece in the museum is Picasso’s painting Guernica. Your guide will explain some of this 20th-century Spanish art, from abstractionism to cubism, surrealism to modernism showing you the most important work of the principal artists. This museum is housed in an elegant old hospital building, and its vaulted hallways are the ideal place to discover many of Spain’s finest artists and sculptors. Along with its extensive Spanish art collection, the museum offers also international temporary exhibitions in its many galleries, making it one of the world’s largest museums for modern and contemporary art.
