Irún is one of the Basque Country’s most historical towns. It is over two thousand years old and innumerable battles that destroyed part of its heritage took place there. Despite this loss, it is still a great holiday destination.

There are plenty of places for you to enjoy in Irún. It is surrounded by the Aiako Harria and Monte Jaizkibel massifs. Plus, there are some truly charming spots such as Santa Elena chapel in the old quarter where important archaeological remains have been uncovered.

El Juncal church, which is listed as a National Artistic Historical Monument, is also incredibly interesting and do not miss Urdanibia Palace, which dates back to the Renaissance period.

Pheasant Island

Pheasant Island is the world’s smallest condominium. This island is not inhabited and, in fact, it isn’t even open to the public. It is a small island that belongs to both France and Spain: it changes ‘owner’ every six months!

This small piece of land between Hendaye in France and Irún in Spain is only 5,000 square metres in size. The Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed there in 1659, bringing 30 years of war to an end.

Oiasso Roman Museum

Oiasso Roman Museum was inaugurated in 2006. It houses numerous important archaeological remains such as the necropolis; the port and warehouses; and the acclaimed Roman baths. The collection is divided up into three rooms: Impacto, Puerto and Oiasso.

In Impacto, you will find important information about the indigenous Basque world and its relationship with the Romans. In Puerto (Spanish for ‘port’), unsurprisingly, you will find a collection from the world of fishing and trade and a display of some of the industries’ essential tools. Last of all, in Oiasso, you can learn more about what life was like, including aspects such as religion, written communication and clothing.

Irún: fun for all the family

Irún Local Council is working hard to boost the town’s reputation as a family holiday destination. There are a number of activities to choose from that will keep the whole family entertained.  What about finding out more about the mining industry? The green train will take you on a journey through the 1970s and tell you about life in Irún and the famous mining industry.

In May and September, there are also organised trips to the Roman town of Oiasso and the mine furnaces in Irugurutzeta.

Irún Town Hall is well worth a visit. It dates back to the 18th century and was constructed in a predominantly Baroque style. The building was built using different types of stone and it is a sight to behold.
