Discover the impressive legacy of Xàtiva, birthplace of famous people and one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.
Xàtiva is synonymous with abundance: for its rich history, enormous cultural influence and rich and abundant gastronomy. It is a small city with almost 30,000 inhabitants that, despite being less known internationally, is home to legends and historical treasures that marked life on the peninsula. A cultural epicenter, it is the birthplace of the Borgia Popes and of numerous intellectuals and poets, as well as the birthplace of the son of the famous Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca.
On this excursion, you will discover the Castle of Xàtiva, a fortress with almost three thousand years of history that allows you to enjoy incredible panoramic views. The armies of Hannibal Barca and his elephants have passed through it, a key piece during the reconquest with King Jaume I the conqueror.
You will explore the old town and the thousand fountains, starting with the Fountain of the Lion and arriving at the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, one of the largest churches in Spain where you will learn about the history of the Borgia Popes, historical Valencian characters who were born in this town. After crossing the market square, we will head towards the fine arts museum Casa de l’Ensenyança, to learn about the history of the destruction of Xàtiva in 1707.
